John Short, experto en geografía, medioambiente y globalización de la Universidad de Bristol, en el Reino Unido, ha dicho este miércoles que la migración de personas provocada por el cambio climático ya ha comenzado, y ha afirmado que el mundo no está preparado para afrontar los efectos del calentamiento global.

«La migración de personas por el cambio climático ya ha empezado. En Bangladés, por ejemplo, existen refugiados del cambio climático que han abandonado sus hogares en lugares rurales debido a que ya no pueden coexistir con un entorno climático tan agresivo», cita el periódico ‘El Universal‘ al científico, entrevistado por la agencia EFE

El profesor ha señalado que en el futuro más cercano los cambios en el medioambiente «se convertirán en la nueva normalidad para los seres en el planeta». Short también ha señalado que esta «nueva normalidad» provocará la salida masiva de la población de las zonas rurales hacia grandes ciudades, que serán consideradas como un lugar más adecuado para la supervivencia.

No obstante, el profesor advierte que «ninguna ciudad está preparada para una migración imprevista como puede ser la que genera el cambio climático», añadiendo que la adaptación de los migrantes en el ambiente urbano será complicada por sus pobres recursos económicos.

Short también ha destacado que otro problema de la adaptación de los «refugiados naturales» es que en cada lugar del planeta los cambios serán diferentes, a la vez que exige más recursos.

The professor pointed out that in the nearest future changes in the environment «will become the new normal for humans on the planet». Short has also pointed out that this «new normal» will cause the mass exit of the population from rural areas to big cities, which will be considered as a more suitable place for survival.

However, the teacher warns that «no city is prepared for unplanned migration as it can be that generates climate change,» adding that the adaptation of migrants in the urban environment will be complicated by poor economic resources.

Short also pointed out that another problem of the adaptation of the «natural refugees» is that in every place on the planet changes will be different, while it requires more resources.
