The inexorable spread of Alzheimer’s disease in the brain kills neurons and, therefore, produces a series of symptoms such as forgetfulness. Now, thanks to a team of researchers at Linköping University (Sweden), and we know how toxic proteins that generate the disease is transmitted from neuron to neuron

…………

Experts, using stained neurons have been able to describe the process by which neurons are invaded by toxic proteins, and the way in which they pass from neuron to neuron. «The spread of Alzheimer’s, which can be studied in the brains of the sick, always follows the same pattern. But so far, we could not know how and what was happening, «says Martin Hallbeck, coordinator of the study published in The Journal of Neuroscience

…….

Protein and Alzheimer’s There are two proteins that have been linked to Alzheimer’s: the beta-amyloid and tau —- smaller groups of the protein beta-amyloid, called oligomers, appear to be the toxic form that gradually destroys brain cells and eventually affect the brain.

……..

The study represents a breakthrough in the understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and how it progresses. The researchers believe it could investigate on how to stop this process through a inhibitor.
