Alwaleed bin Talal, un empresario multimillonario y miembro de la casa real de Arabia Saudita, ha admitido que ese país financió al Estado Islámico (EI) para ayudar a combatir y derrocar al Gobierno de Siria.

La revelación tuvo lugar durante una entrevista concedida el pasado martes a la cadena CNN, en la cual el magnate admitió que Arabia Saudita otorgó apoyo financiero a los extremistas del EI. «Desafortunadamente, algunos en Arabia Saudita financiaron a combatientes extremistas en Siria», dijo Alwaleed, que es sobrino del rey Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, según informa el portal PressTV.

No obstante, Alwaleed aseguró que la petromonarquía ha suspendido el financiamiento de la milicia yihadista. «Arabia Saudita ha implementado reglas estrictas para detener lo que estaba sucediendo. Por lo tanto, el financiamiento ha sido suspendido completamente», agregó.

Asimismo, recientemente el ayatolá Ahmad Jatami de Irán también afirmó que los petrodólares sauditas estaban financiado al movimiento yihadista del EI, subrayando que cualquier acto de terrorismo en el mundo musulmán está siendo financiado por la monarquía árabe.

Lo anterior tiene como trasfondo el enfrentamiento regional entre Irán y Arabia Saudita ya que Riad se opone al apoyo de Irán a grupos chiítas en Siria e Irak. Por esta razón la monarquía saudita optó por integrarse en la coalición encabezada por EE.UU. que, desde el pasado 23 de septiembre, bombardea las posiciones bajo control del EI en Siria e Irak, careciendo de una autorización previa tanto del Gobierno sirio como de una resolución por parte de la ONU. Ello es señalado por Irán como una clara injerencia de Washington en la región.

Las potencias occidentales y sus aliados regionales –especialmente Catar, Turquía y Arabia Saudita– han respaldado desde 2011 a los grupos extremistas que operan al interior del país con el objetivo de derrocar al Gobierno de Bashar Al Assad.
