Se espera que la nueva nave espacial de tercera generación, más moderna y más inteligente, se acople con la Estación Espacial Internacional (EEI) dos días más tarde, a las 04:12 GMT del sábado, según informa la agencia Tass. La Soyuz lleva a la EEI al cosmonauta ruso Anatoly Ivanishin, la astronauta estadounidense Kathleen Rubens y al japonés Takuya Onishi.

La modificación de la Soyuz MS es el resultado de una profunda modernización de la serie de las naves espaciales Soyuz TMA-M y ha sido catalogada de «histórica». Se diferencia de la versión anterior por su nuevo sistema de mando y telemetría, que puede trabajar a través de satélites de retransmisión Luch, un nuevo sistema de acercamiento y acoplamiento Kurs-NA y otros equipos. Además, ha sido mejorado el sistema energético del bloque con paneles solares que generan más energía
