Investigadores de la Universidad de Nanjing han descubierto la primera ‘penicilina virológica’. La MIR2911, una molécula que se encuentra en la hierba china madreselva, ha conseguido frenar el avance de la gripe de tipo A en ratones

El estudio, publicado en la revista ‘Nature’, establece que la madreselva puede prevenir y reducir una infección de la gripe de tipo A: incluyendo sus cepas H1N1, H5N1 y H7N9.

La madreselva, planta usada en la medicina tradicional china, se ha consumido generalmente en forma de té durante siglos como remedio contra el virus de la gripe, pero nunca hasta ahora se había realizado un estudio que evidenciara su eficacia con una base científica.

Esta investigación ha identificado un componente activo de la hierba madreselva, denominado ‘MIR2911’, que actúa directamente contra el virus de la gripe A bloqueando su replicación. Asimismo, conserva su acción en las cepas de la gripe porcina H1N1, la gripe aviar H5N1 y la infección tipo H7N9.

Utilizando a ratones como sujeto de estudio en el laboratorio, estos científicos descubrieron que tras administrar en su torrente sanguíneo y tejido pulmonar esta molécula de la madreselva, se bloquearon dos de los genes que el virus de la gripe A necesita para la replicación viral en el organismo (genes PB2 y NS1), deteniéndose así su acción. Los investigadores esperan poder demostrar su eficacia en humanos.

Nanjing University researchers have discovered the first ‘virologic penicillin’. The MIR2911, a molecule that is the Chinese herb, honeysuckle, has managed to halt the advance of flu type A in mice.

The study, published in the journal ‘Nature’, establishes that Honeysuckle can prevent and reduce an influenza infection of type A: including H1N1, H5N1 and H7N9 strains.

Honeysuckle, plant used in traditional Chinese medicine, has been usually consumed in the form of tea for centuries as a remedy against the flu virus, but never before has it had conducted a study that show its effectiveness with a scientific basis.

This research has identified a component asset of honeysuckle grass, called ‘MIR2911’, which acts directly against influenza A virus by blocking its replication. Likewise, retains its action in strains of the H1N1 swine flu, avian influenza H5N1 and infection type H7N9.
