Benedicto XVI afirmó que mientras estuvo en el trono papal tuvo momentos de alegría pero también «momentos difíciles», pero que siempre se ha sentido guiado y protegido por Dios. Asimismo, indicó que «amar a la Iglesia significa también tener la valentía de tomar decisiones difíciles, teniendo siempre presente el bien de la Iglesia y no el de uno mismo».

El papa se dirigió en varios idiomas y en su mensaje en español agradeció “a todos el respeto y la comprensión” con la que han acogido su renuncia, que aseguró ha realizado “con plena libertad”.

A las 09:30 GMT recorrió en su papamóvil la plaza de San Pedro del Vaticano para saludar a los fieles justo antes de celebrar la audiencia. Al lugar asistieron más de 150.000 fieles de todo el mundo que empezaron a congregarse desde tempranas horas de la mañana.

Este jueves 28 de febrero el sumo pontífice se reunirá por la tarde con los cardenales en la Sala Clementina del Vaticano y a las 19:00 GMT dejará de ser papa y se abrirá la llamada sede vacante, el tiempo que transcurre desde la muerte o renuncia de un papa hasta la elección del siguiente. Este acto de despedida también será transmitido por RT a la hora señalada.

Benedicto XVI confesó el pasado 11 de febrero que no tiene fuerzas para ejercer adecuadamente el ministerio petrino, por lo que decidió dimitir a su cargo de máxima autoridad de la Iglesia católica. La última vez que se produjo una renuncia al trono papal fue en 1415. El código canónico estipula que el sumo pontífice puede dimitir sin necesidad de aprobación alguna, la única condición es su libre voluntad.
