MOTHER TERESA OF CALCUTTA

Nirmal Hriday in Bengali means Pure Heart. It was the Casa Hogar for the dying that they collected from the streets of Calcutta. Mother Teresa, from the first moment she took to the streets after her exclaustration, thought of caring in a special way for the dying. In the very poor neighborhood of Moti Jhil she tried to do something in a three by three meter room she had rented for five rupees a month. She there she accommodated three dying on the floor. But one night one of them died and the other two ran away

Within two months she managed to get a place, wall to wall with the famous Kali temple. It was a refuge for pilgrims, especially those who came from outside Calcutta. A rich merchant provided them with food and even clothing. But he had become a den of drug addict players and people of bad living

For a few months, after taking charge of the place, Mother herself experienced many difficulties. Criticism and threats abounded, and stonings were frequent.

The younger ones who had previously frequented the place went to the local Congress committee and complained that a foreign woman was converting the poor to Christianity. They also went to the police commissioner and demanded that she be expelled from it. The commissioner gave them his word, but he said that he had to see for himself first. When she went there, the Mother was attending to a patient with cancer or something similar and she was busy applying potassium permanganate on her sores, from which came

worms. The stench was unbearable. God only knows how the sisters can tolerate it. Then the Mother, despite being so busy, she knew that this man had come with some purpose. If she wished to examine this, she would accompany him. He said no, that he preferred to see things for himself. And so he did. Meanwhile, a group of boys had arrived and surrounded the Mother while she was working. When the police commissioner saw them, he told them: “I have given my word that she would expel this lady, and I intend to keep it. But before you do that, you have to get your mothers and your sisters to come and do the work that she is doing. Only then will I exercise my authority.” Everyone was stunned. There was a man working on the docks who had a huge bale fall on him on one occasion when he was watching an unloading operation and the chain on the crane snapped. He did not die. An ambulance was sent for him and he was rushed to hospital, where a doctor ordered the ambulance stretcher bearers to put the stretcher on top of the bed. They objected, saying that it was his stretcher and that they should take it away. When the doctor explained that the man could not be moved at all, that he had suffered a tremendous blow, the orderlies began to argue and refused to listen to the doctor. Then that man began, literally, to walk. He got up and started to leave. He was half dead, but he wouldn’t stop yelling, screaming and hurling insults.
