Un grupo de científicos internacionales de diferentes instituciones, entre ellas el Centro Común de Investigación de la Comisión Europea, ha publicado un estudio íntegro que advierte sobre las múltiples amenazas que se cernirán sobre Europa en las próximas décadas a causa del cambio climático. Su motivo es advertir a los europeos sobre las zonas en las que muy pronto será peligroso vivir.

Los territorios más afectados por amenazas múltiples serán el noroeste de la península Ibérica y el mar del Norte

Europa está sufriendo las mayores pérdidas de la historia debidas a los riesgos relacionados con el clima, y será aún peor, ya que lo más probable es que «el cambio climático aumente los riesgos planteados por los fenómenos meteorológicos extremos», reza el estudio.

Se trata de olas de frío y olas de calor, desbordamientos de ríos e inundaciones en las costas marítimas, sequías, incendios forestales y tormentas de viento. El estudio examinó estas siete amenazas climáticas y calculó tanto los riesgos particulares para diferentes partes de Europa como las regiones que sufrirán a causa de múltiples fenómenos climáticos extremos en el transcurso de este siglo.

Especialmente sufrirán España y Portugal debido a que las consecuencias de los desastres naturales podrán afectar a sus economías, comenta al diario noruego ‘Dagbladet’ el investigador Bjorn Samset.

Los investigadores concluyen que toda Europa sufrirá un «aumento fuerte y progresivo» de las amenazas climáticas, que se intensificarán gradualmente desde el norte hacía el suroeste europeo, que sufrirá ante todo por el aumento de las olas de calor, las sequías y los incendios forestales.

Particularmente peligrosas serán las costas y llanuras inundables de Europa occidental y meridional, España incluida. Estas áreas suelen ser las más pobladas e importantes económicamente, por lo que las inundaciones y tormentas, combinadas con otras amenazas climáticas, pueden tener consecuencias críticas.

Otro problema es que los desastres naturales serán más peligrosos porque serán más frecuentes. Así, de acuerdo con el estudio, en el sur de Europa para 2080 podrán ocurrir anualmente desastres que ahora se dan con muy escasa frecuencia, por ejemplo, olas de calor tan fuertes solo suceden una vez cada cien años o, dicho de otra forma, que solo tienen un 1% de probabilidades de que sucedan en un año.

Los territorios más afectados por amenazas múltiples serán el noroeste de la península Ibérica, el mar del Norte, las islas Británicas, partes de Francia, los Alpes, el norte de Italia y los países Balcánicos a lo largo del río Danubio.

A group of international scientists from different institutions, including the Joint Centre for research of the European Commission, has published a complete study that warns of the multiple threats that they hover over Europe in the coming decades because of climate change. Their motive is to inform Europeans about the areas in which very soon will be dangerous to live.

Europe is suffering the greatest losses ever due to climate-related risks, and it will be even worse, since it is likely that «climate change increase the risks posed by extreme weather events,» says the study.

It’s cold waves and heat waves, flooding of rivers and floods in the coastal seas, droughts, forest fires and wind storms. The study examined these seven climatic threats and calculated both risks particular to different parts of Europe and the regions that will suffer because of multiple extreme weather events over the course of this century.

Another problem is that natural disasters will be more dangerous because they will become more frequent. Thus, according to the study, in the South of Europe for 2080 may occur annually disaster that now occur with very low frequency, for example, as strong heat waves happen only once every one hundred years or other forms, which have only a 1% chance that happen in a year.
