El líder de los cristianos asediados en Siria, el patriarca ortodoxo Ignacio Aphrem II Karim, ha emitido una súplica sincera a Occidente para que «deje de armar y apoyar a los grupos terroristas» que destruyen su país y «masacran» a su pueblo. Además, afirma que la mayoría de ciudadanos sirios apoyan el Gobierno de Bashar al-Asad: «Reconocemos los gobernantes legítimos y oramos por ellos».

En una entrevista con Vatican Insider, el patriarca ortodoxo sirio, Ignacio Aphrem II Karim, ha suplicado a Occidente «deje de armar a grupos terroristas que están masacrando a nuestro pueblo», sugiriendo que «si Occidente quiere hacer algo con la crisis actual, lo más eficaz sería apoyar a los gobiernos locales, que necesitan ejércitos y fuerzas suficientes para mantener la seguridad y la defensa de poblaciones contra los ataques».
