En su rueda de prensa anual, el presidente ruso, Vladímir Putin, se refirió a la relación entre Rusia y Occidente y a las intenciones de algunos países de doblegar a Rusia, afirmando que «al oso siempre tratarán de ponerle una cadena».

Putin señaló que esta actitud no se formó tras la reunificación de Crimea con Rusia, sino que surgió hace ya muchos años, y que se trata de un hecho que se manifiesta en las acciones de Occidente respecto a muchas cuestiones, desde el conflicto en el Cáucaso del Norte hasta la organización de los Juegos Olímpicos de Sochi.
