El tifón Haiyan con vientos de hasta 315 kilómetros por hora ha dejado 9,5 millones de damnificados en Filipinas. El periodista del diario italiano ‘La Repubblica’ Maurizio Ricci asegura que el mensaje es muy claro: el clima extremo ya está aquí.

«Todo lo normal y razonable que era de esperar de los fenómenos meteorológicos ya no vale. La época climática anterior ha terminado ya y ha comenzado otra, en la que cualquier evento que ayer parecía extraordinario va a ser sistemático, común y corriente. Los récords de la velocidad del viento, nivel de precipitaciones y calor se batirán todo el rato», sostiene Ricci.

Cabe recordar que ya hace cuatro años la ONU advirtió de que la humanidad estaba entrando en «una época de fenómenos meteorológicos extremos«. Es decir que los eventos del tipo del tifón Haiyan o el huracán Sandy —responsable de haber estremecido la costa atlántica de EE.UU. en 2012—, que anteriormente se registraban una vez cada siglo, a partir de ahora van a repetirse cada década o aun con más frecuencia. Las temperaturas anuales suben y el respectivo exceso de energía aumenta la intensidad de los vientos y las olas. En consecuencia, habrá menos ciclones, pero serán mucho más devastadores, asegura el periodista italiano.

Cabe recordar que este lunes en la capital de Polonia, Varsovia, arranca la XIX Cumbre Climática de la ONU, que durará hasta el próximo 22 de noviembre. Su fin será intentar acordar los principios de un nuevo tratado global que limite la emisión de gases del efecto invernadero, considerados la causa principal del cambio climático. Sin embargo, la mayoría de los analistas se muestra pesimista en cuanto a las perspectivas de la cumbre: pronostican que, al igual que en los encuentros anteriores, no se alcanzará ningún acuerdo. Los opositores de la limitación de las emisiones argumentan que los efectos de la actividad humana no pueden elevar las temperaturas medias globales en más de 2 grados, el umbral que los científicos consideran un cambio irreversible.
