Cuando en primavera del año pasado Mehrez y Latifa reconocieron a su hijo Sami por la televisión siria entre un grupo de rebeldes capturados, no pudieron creer lo que sus ojos veían. Sami, de tan solo 21 años de edad, dijo que cruzó la frontera de su país, Túnez, para luchar por el pueblo sirio. Sin embargo, sus padres siguen sin entender cómo su hijo, un chico tímido, se convirtió en un yihadista sin que ellos se percataran de ello.

“Hace un año, Sami empezó a rezar. Yo me alegré, porque soy musulmana y pensaba que esto era algo muy bueno. Puede ser que después de esto empezara a visitar la mezquita y escuchara algo que le hizo ir a Siria”, dijo a RT su madre.

Un día Sami le dijo a su madre que iba a una conferencia en Libia y que no pasaría allí más de 7 ó 10 días. Se fue y durante toda la semana llamaba a casa a diario. Prometió regresar a Túnez, pero nunca lo hizo, señaló su padre, Mehrez.

Los investigadores de la ONU destacan que ciudadanos de al menos 29 países están luchando junto a los rebeldes sirios. En su mayoría, sunitas procedentes de los países vecinos. Sin embargo, algunos han llegado a Siria desde lugares tan lejanos como EE.UU. y desde Europa. Asimismo, los informes oficiales afirman que unas 400 de las 5.000 mezquitas de Túnez son controladas por islamistas radicales que llaman a sus seguidores a participar en la yihad en el extranjero.
