Según la representante de la Administración siria, Boussaina Chaabane, se entregó al mandatario sudafricano, Jacob Zuma, que presidirá el 26 de marzo la cumbre de los BRICS (grupo conformado por Brasil, Rusia, India, China y Sudáfrica) un mensaje del presidente Assad sobre la crisis siria.

El jefe de Estado sirio pide, en primer lugar, una intervención para facilitar un diálogo abierto con los rebeldes , que tiene previsto comenzar en breve, según apunta el mensaje.

Los cinco países integrantes del bloque BRICS han tomado una postura neutral e n el prolongado conflicto sirio y han votado regularmente en contra de las resoluciones más estrictas dirigidas contra el Gobierno sirio.

El conflicto sirio dura ya dos años. Según la Oficina del Alto Comisionado de la ONU para los Derechos Humanos, se ha cobrado 70.000 víctimas , mientras que el número de sirios que se han visto obligados a huir del país ha alcanzado un millón de personas. Amnistía Internacional, por su parte, ha documentado una drástica escalada de violencia en el país por parte de la oposición armada, incluyendo toma de rehenes, tortura y ejecuciones masivas
