Parece que China no escatima esfuerzos para convertirse en la primera superpotencia mundial. Esta vez el gigante asiático quiere potenciar el coeficiente intelectual de su población y desarrolla para ello un proyecto de ingeniería genética de bebés.

En el Instituto de Genómica de Pekín los científicos han recogido muestras de ADN de dos mil personas con coeficientes de inteligencia de los más altos y están secuenciando sus genomas completos en un intento por identificar los alelos que determinan la inteligencia humana.

Al parecer, no están lejos de encontrarlos y, cuando lo hagan, la selección de embriones permitirá a los padres escoger un brillante cigoto para, potencialmente, aumentar la inteligencia de cada generación una media de entre cinco y 15 puntos de coeficiente intelectual.

Los científicos casi terminaron la secuenciación en el marco del Proyecto de Genética Cognitiva y los resultados estarán disponibles en breve, dijo Geoffrey Miller, psicólogo evolucionista y profesor de la Universidad de Nueva York, uno de las dos mil personas que contribuyó con su ADN al proyecto en una entrevista con la página web vice.com.
