Donde sí se toman en serio los riesgos de una guerra nuclear es la isla de Baengnyeong, situada a unos 17 kilómetros de la costa norcoreana. El sector más afectado por el peligro de un ataque es el turismo, y los habitantes se preparan para lo peor.

Anteriormente Baengnyeong, una de las más pintorescas islas surcoreanas del Mar Amarillo de solo 45 kilómetros cuadrados de superficie, era visitada por miles de turistas mensualmente. Después de la prueba nuclear subterránea realizada por Pyongyang el pasado 12 de febrero, «no hay ninguno», se quejan los isleños empleados en el servicio.

Es que en uno de sus discursos publicados el líder supremo de Corea del Norte, Kim Jong-un, mencionó este punto geográfico como un blanco prioritario del ataque con misiles en caso de una guerra. Reiteró en más de una ocasión que asestará un primer golpe termonuclear contra esta isla, poblada por 5.000 civiles y otros tantos militares de una guarnición surcoreana.
