El papa Francisco siempre soñaba con “una iglesia para el pobre, para el que sufre. Esto es lo que siempre predicó». Así lo contó la hermana del sumo pontífice, María Elena Bergoglio, en una entrevista concedida en exclusiva a RT.

Cuando dieron la noticia no puedo describir que se siente. Cuando dijeron ‘Jorge Mario’ yo ya no escuché más nada, no escuché ni el apellido, ni el nombre que había elegido: largué a llorar como loca, porque era algo que no esperaba […] pero a la vez empezó el vértigo o, como yo lo defino, ‘me arrasó el tsunami’. […] No hemos tenido tiempo para meternos un poco adentro. De todas maneras es una noticia que no se digiere tan rápido y tan fácil. Yo supongo que con el tiempo sí, voy a ir logrando entender que Jorge es Francisco y que Francisco es Jorge”, comenta Maria Elene, recordando los instantes que siguieron al nombramiento de su hermano como papa.

Yo creo que la iglesia abrió sus puertas y que le dijo al mundo: ‘Acá estoy. Soy de todos, no de un solo continente. Eso ya es muy fuerte’, subraya la única hermana viva del papa, que reclama cambios a la gente como los que se esperan del papa. “También tenemos que cambiar nosotros. Porque, si no, estos cambios que la Iglesia nos da no van a servir. Iglesia somos todos. Tener el coraje de ir cambiando”.

¿Cómo surgió su vocación?
La hermana del papa Francisco recuerda que sus padres les inculcaron a los cinco hijos la fe «desde la cuna» y, además, «enseñando con el ejemplo». Después de terminar sus estudios secundarios Jorge Bergoglio, ahora Francisco, decidió entrar al seminario

Jorge se veía enamorado de una chica del grupo y, aparentemente, el sentimiento era mutuo. El 21 de septiembre se iban a festejar el día de la primavera y Jorge le iba a decir lo que sentía, pero entra primero a la parroquia a rezar un ratito y parece que allí es donde se dio cuenta que tenía vocación religiosa. No va al picnic y se queda a hablar con un sacerdote. Por supuesto que esta declaración nunca se hizo. Él dice: Yo tuve que elegir entre el amor a una mujer y el amor a dios”, cuenta María Elena Bergoglio.
