La edici\u00f3n del genoma se ha convertido en un asunto candente despu\u00e9s del gran inter\u00e9s que ha despertado el uso de la t\u00e9cnica CRISPR [v\u00e9ase<\/em> \u00abLa edici\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica, m\u00e1s precisa\u00bb, por Margaret Knox; Investigaci\u00f3n y Ciencia<\/em>, febrero de 2015<\/a>] para modificar embriones humanos. Como testigo del desarrollo de este avance, me preocupa la forma en que podr\u00eda llegar a utilizarse. Pero no en el sentido en que el lector estar\u00e1 pensando.<\/span><\/p>\n

Las cuestiones \u00e9ticas que plantea la ingenier\u00eda aplicada a la l\u00ednea germinal humana sin duda merecen consideraci\u00f3n. Sin embargo, no deben distraernos de un problema mucho m\u00e1s acuciante: el creciente uso de CRISPR para corregir los genomas de poblaciones de animales salvajes. A menos que se regule y se contenga en el laboratorio, esta pr\u00e1ctica entra\u00f1a el potencial de alterar r\u00e1pidamente ecosistemas de una manera perjudicial e irreversible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ya se ha utilizado CRISPR para modificar mosquitos y la mosca de la fruta Drosophila melanogaster<\/em>. Y, en combinaci\u00f3n con la t\u00e9cnica del \u00abimpulso g\u00e9nico\u00bb (gene drive<\/em>), se ha visto que aumenta enormemente la eficacia para transferir modificaciones a la descendencia y a lo largo de la poblaci\u00f3n. Una vez introducidos, los cambios gen\u00e9ticos se autopropagan; si se liberaran fuera del laboratorio, los efectos se extender\u00edan con cada nueva generaci\u00f3n y pronto estar\u00edan fuera de control.<\/span><\/p>\n

The edition of the genome has become a hot topic after the great interest which has awakened the use of CRISPR technique [view \u00abediting genetic, more precise\u00bb, by Margaret Knox; Research and science, February 2015] to modify human embryos. As a witness of the development of this advance, form that could be used concerns me. But not in the sense that the reader will be thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ethical issues posed by the human germline engineering certainly deserve consideration. However, should not distract us from a much more pressing problem: the growing use of CRISPR to correct the genomes of populations of wild animals. Unless it is regulated and is contained in the laboratory, this practice involves the potential to rapidly alter ecosystems in a damaging and irreversible way.<\/span><\/p>\n

CRISPR has already been used to modify mosquitoes and the Drosophila fruit fly melanogaster. And, in combination with the technique of gene \u00abimpulse\u00bb (drive) gene, has been that it greatly increases efficiency for transfer changes to the offspring and throughout the population. Once introduced, self-propagating genetic changes; If they released outside of the laboratory, the effects spill over with each new generation and would soon be out of control.<\/span><\/p>\n
