La universidad polit\u00e9cnica de la ciudad siberiana de Tomsk ha puesto en marcha un programa internacional de estudio de las posibles consecuencias de la fusi\u00f3n de los glaciares del \u00c1rtico<\/strong>. Expertos de Rusia, EE.UU., Suecia, Pa\u00edses Bajos, Gran Breta\u00f1a y otros pa\u00edses han unido esfuerzos para estudiar el problema y prevenir la cat\u00e1strofe que entra\u00f1ar\u00eda la emisi\u00f3n de unos quinientos campos de metano<\/strong> que se encuentran bajo los espesos hielos glaciales.<\/span><\/p>\n

El a\u00f1o pasado fueron organizadas dos expediciones internacionales al \u00c1rtico para estudiar a fondo el efecto de la degradaci\u00f3n del ‘permafrost’ bajo el agua sobre el clima del planeta en el mar de L\u00e1ptev y en el Oc\u00e9ano \u00c1rtico. En esta \u00faltima expedici\u00f3n, a bordo del rompehielos de investigaci\u00f3n Oden, participaron 80 expertos de 15 universidades del mundo.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00abA profundidades de 60 a 100 metros fueron detectadas enormes emisiones de metano. En estas a\u00e9reas el ‘permafrost’ se encuentra en contacto con agua tibia del fondo durante aproximadamente 9.000-10.000 a\u00f1os, lo que es suficiente para que el agua se descongele<\/strong>. […] En total, durante nuestra \u00faltima expedici\u00f3n en Oden pudimos hallar unos 500 campos an\u00f3malos de expulsiones de metano\u00bb, cont\u00f3 al diario ruso ‘Rossiskaya Gazeta’<\/a> el cient\u00edfico ruso Igor Semiletov, uno de los participantes de la expedici\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n

Es decir, el derretimiento de los glaciares conlleva la liberaci\u00f3n a la atm\u00f3sfera del metano que se encuentra en las profundidades del \u00c1rtico, y este gas no expulsado puede afectar de forma impredecible<\/strong> a la ecolog\u00eda de la Tierra. Los cient\u00edficos involucrados en el programa contemplan cuatro opciones: desde la m\u00e1s suave a la extremadamente terrible, la que los investigadores tachan de ‘catastr\u00f3fica’. De acuerdo con esta \u00faltima previsi\u00f3n, la concentraci\u00f3n de las emisiones de metano se incrementar\u00e1 en varias veces. \u00abSi esto sucede, el Protocolo de Kioto parecer\u00eda un escenario demasiado optimista\u00bb, asegur\u00f3 Semiletov.<\/span><\/p>\n

In these areas the ‘permafrost’ is in contact with the warm water for approximately 9,000 – 10,000 years, which is enough for the water to thaw.
