Aunque por el momento el estatus de ‘refugiado por razones clim\u00e1ticas’ no existe, en el futuro esta situaci\u00f3n podr\u00eda cambiar, ya que algunos isle\u00f1os est\u00e1n dispuestos a ‘pelear’ por este derecho hasta en los tribunales internacionales.<\/span><\/p>\n

As\u00ed, en octubre de 2013 el kiribatiano Ioane Teitiota pidi\u00f3 asilo clim\u00e1tico en\u00a0Nueva Zelanda<\/strong>. Trat\u00f3 de convencer a las autoridades neozelandesas de que su pa\u00eds se muere, se ahoga, y tem\u00eda por el futuro de sus hijos.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00abMe preocupa nuestro futuro, nuestros hijos\u00bb, sostiene Teitiota. La gente en Kiribati \u00abest\u00e1 preocupada por su vida\u00bb, agrega.<\/span><\/p>\n

Si se hubiera aceptado su petici\u00f3n, Teitiota se habr\u00eda convertido en el primer refugiado clim\u00e1tico del mundo.<\/strong> Pero el Tribunal de Inmigraci\u00f3n de Nueva Zelanda desestim\u00f3 su solicitud con la siguiente explicaci\u00f3n: \u00abEn realidad, toda la poblaci\u00f3n de Kiribati se ve obligada a hacer frente a la degradaci\u00f3n del medio ambiente\u00bb.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despu\u00e9s, la reclamaci\u00f3n de Teitiota fue rechazada por el Tribunal Supremo y el Tribunal de Apelaci\u00f3n. Sin embargo, el hombre dice que no se va a quedar de brazos cruzados, y su abogado est\u00e1 preparado para llevar su caso al Comit\u00e9 de Derechos Humanos de la ONU<\/strong>, si los dem\u00e1s medios fallan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Durante los \u00faltimos 20 a\u00f1os, Nueva Zelanda y Australia han rechazado al menos 17 solicitudes<\/strong> de ciudadanos de las islas del Pac\u00edfico que ped\u00edan la condici\u00f3n de refugiados por el cambio clim\u00e1tico.<\/span><\/p>\n

Si bien ninguna petici\u00f3n ha tenido \u00e9xito de momento, el tema del cambio clim\u00e1tico ocup\u00f3 un lugar destacado en un proceso del a\u00f1o pasado en el que una familia de Tuvalu logr\u00f3 apelar su deportaci\u00f3n de Nueva Zelanda por razones humanitarias<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A pesar de que la motivac\u00f3n principal de la decisi\u00f3n fue que la mayor parte de los parientes de la unidad familiar viv\u00edan en Nueva Zelanda, el impacto del cambio clim\u00e1tico en la capacidad de la familia para llevar una \u00abvida segura y satisfactoria\u00bb en Tuvalu tambi\u00e9n ocup\u00f3 un lugar destacado, sobre todo en lo relacionado con los dos ni\u00f1os peque\u00f1os del nucleo familiar.<\/span><\/p>\n
