WASHINGTON, DC –<\/strong> El martes, la Academia Nacional de Ciencias public\u00f3 dos informes sobre la intervenci\u00f3n clim\u00e1tico a trav\u00e9s de la geoingenier\u00eda. Estos informes eval\u00faan dos categor\u00edas de geoingenier\u00eda: eliminaci\u00f3n de di\u00f3xido de carbono y el secuestro y modificaci\u00f3n del albedo. <\/strong>Aunque las Partes en el Convenio sobre la Diversidad Biol\u00f3gica acordaron una moratoria sobre la geoingenier\u00eda en 2010, informes como \u00e9stos indican que el momento no se ha ralentizado y que algunos siguen captar a estos arreglos tecnol\u00f3gicos como opciones viables para combatir el cambio clim\u00e1tico.<\/span><\/p>\n

La geoingenier\u00eda es la manipulaci\u00f3n intencional, a gran escala tecnol\u00f3gica<\/strong> de los sistemas de la Tierra, incluyendo los sistemas relacionados con el clima. Estas tecnolog\u00edas generalmente se dividen en tres grandes \u00e1reas: modificaci\u00f3n (manejo de la radiaci\u00f3n solar como blanqueamiento de nubes que cubren y desiertos con pl\u00e1sticos reflectantes) albedo, la eliminaci\u00f3n del di\u00f3xido de carbono y el secuestro (como la fertilizaci\u00f3n oce\u00e1nica, el biochar, y m\u00e1quinas de extracci\u00f3n de carbono), y la modificaci\u00f3n del clima ( tales como la siembra de nubes y la modificaci\u00f3n de tormenta).<\/span><\/p>\n

Si bien estamos de acuerdo en que el nivel actual de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero nos deja vulnerables al caos clim\u00e1tico, la geoingenier\u00eda nos llevar\u00e1 en la direcci\u00f3n equivocada. Sirve como una distracci\u00f3n peligrosa de los debates cruciales y las acciones que deben llevarse a cabo para mitigar y adaptarse a la alteraci\u00f3n del clima.<\/span><\/p>\n

La geoingenier\u00eda presume que podemos aplicar una soluci\u00f3n tecnol\u00f3gica dram\u00e1tica a la alteraci\u00f3n del clima. En lugar de enfrentar la realidad de que tenemos que reducir dr\u00e1sticamente las emisiones de carbono, reducir nuestros niveles de consumo y la transici\u00f3n r\u00e1pida a la energ\u00eda renovable<\/strong>, un poco de esperanza a simplemente redise\u00f1ar el clima, la tierra y los oc\u00e9anos para frenar te\u00f3ricamente abajo y revertir la alteraci\u00f3n del clima.<\/span><\/p>\n

La geoingenier\u00eda es un intento de los m\u00e1ximos responsables de la alteraci\u00f3n del clima para seguir contaminando <\/strong>en lugar de comprometerse con las acciones y los fondos necesarios para ayudar a los pa\u00edses y comunidades que se ver\u00e1n m\u00e1s perjudicados por el cambio clim\u00e1tico.<\/span><\/p>\n

Los efectos secundarios de las intervenciones de geoingenier\u00eda son desconocidos y no probados. Con el fin de tener un impacto notable en las temperaturas globales, proyectos de geoingenier\u00eda tendr\u00edan que ser desplegados en una escala masiva y global. Estos \u00abexperimentos\u00bb no s\u00f3lo actuar en ausencia de consenso cient\u00edfico, lo cual viola el principio de precauci\u00f3n, pero tambi\u00e9n podr\u00edan tener f\u00e1cilmente consecuencias no deseadas debido a una falla mec\u00e1nica, error humano, la falta de comprensi\u00f3n de los ecosistemas, la biodiversidad y el clima de la Tierra, imprevisto naturales fen\u00f3menos, irreversibilidad o financiaci\u00f3n interrupciones.<\/span><\/p>\n

Estos experimentos tambi\u00e9n violan la moratoria 2010 establecido por los 193 pa\u00edses que son partes en la Convenci\u00f3n de las Naciones Unidas sobre la Diversidad Biol\u00f3gica, debido a la incertidumbre en torno a los riesgos ambientales, sociales, culturales y econ\u00f3micas de geoingenier\u00eda. El Tratado de Modificaci\u00f3n Ambiental de las Naciones Unidas ha prohibido los usos hostiles de modificaci\u00f3n ambiental desde 1976.<\/span><\/p>\n

Uno de los experimentos de los pa\u00edses, por lo tanto, podr\u00edan tener efectos devastadores en otros pa\u00edses y el sistema clim\u00e1tico mundial<\/a> .<\/span><\/p>\n

WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013<\/strong> On Tuesday, the National Academy of Sciences released two reports on climate intervention through geoengineering. These reports assess two categories of geoengineering: carbon dioxide removal and sequestration and albedo modification. Although the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity agreed upon a moratorium on geoengineering in 2010, reports such as these indicate that momentum has not slowed and that some continue to grasp at these techno-fixes as viable options to combat climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geoengineering is the intentional, large-scale technological manipulation of the Earth\u2019s systems, including systems related to climate. These technologies generally fall under three broad areas: albedo modification (solar radiation management such as cloud whitening and covering deserts with reflective plastics), carbon dioxide removal and sequestration (such as ocean fertilization, biochar, and carbon extraction machines), and weather modification (such as cloud seeding and storm modification).<\/span><\/p>\n

Friends of the Earth is committed to fighting climate change through sustainable and just solutions. While we agree that the current level of greenhouse gas emissions leaves us vulnerable to climate chaos, geoengineering will take us in the wrong direction. It serves as a dangerous distraction from the crucial discussions and actions that need to take place to mitigate and adapt to climate disruption.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geoengineering presumes that we can apply a dramatic technological fix to climate disruption. Instead of facing the reality that we need to drastically reduce our carbon emissions, lower our consumption levels and rapidly transition to renewable energy, some hope to simply reengineer the climate, the land and the oceans to theoretically slow down and reverse climate disruption.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geoengineering is an attempt by those most responsible for climate disruption to continue polluting instead of committing to the necessary actions and funding needed to help those countries and communities that will be most harmed by climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

The side effects of geoengineering interventions are unknown and untested. In order to have any noticeable impact on global temperatures, geoengineering projects would have to be deployed on a massive, global scale. These \u201cexperiments\u201d would not only take action in the absence of scientific consensus, hence violating the precautionary principle, but could also easily have unintended consequences due to mechanical failure, human error, inadequate understanding of ecosystems, biodiversity and the Earth\u2019s climate, unforeseen natural phenomena, irreversibility or funding interruptions.<\/span><\/p>\n

These experiments also violate the 2010 moratorium established by the 193 countries who are parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity due to uncertainty around geoengineering\u2019s environmental, social, cultural, and economic risks. The UN Environmental Modification Treaty has prohibited the hostile uses of environmental modification since 1976.<\/span><\/p>\n

Only the few wealthy nations, elite citizens and corporations with immense funding and technology at their disposal could conduct geoengineering experiments. One country\u2019s experiments, therefore, could have devastating effects on other countries and the global climate system<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geoengineering conflicts with sustainable and just solutions to the climate crisis. Real climate justice requires dealing with root causes of climate change, not launching risky, unproven and unjust schemes. Friends of the Earth supports the current moratorium agreed upon through the Convention on Biological Diversity and would condemn any proposals to move geoengineering\u00a0towards real world experimentation.<\/span><\/p>\n
