Un grupo de cient\u00edficos de Darmouth College ( EE.UU.) organiz\u00f3 una expedici\u00f3n a la Rep\u00fablica Democr\u00e1tica del Congo para probar los rumores sobre una tribu que, supuestamente, pasaba la mayor\u00eda de su vida en los \u00e1rboles <\/strong>buscando colmenas de abejas silvestres.<\/span><\/p>\n

Los expedicionarios comprobaron que en la parte central del pa\u00eds habitan unas tribus<\/a> de pigmeos pertenecientes a las etnias Twa y Bachigas<\/strong> <\/span>. Los Twa obtienen la mayor parte de su sustento por medio de la caza y la recogida de fruta y mie<\/strong>l, para lo cual se ven obligados a pasar mucho tiempo en los \u00e1rboles, escalando hasta alturas de 50 metros en busca de frutas y de miel. A diferencia de muchas otras tribus africanas y asi\u00e1ticas, pr\u00e1cticamente ning\u00fan miembro de la tribu de los Twa muri\u00f3 a consecuencia de ca\u00eddas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nResulta que esta tribu puede flexionar la planta del pie en un \u00e1ngulo muy amplio de hasta 45 grados<\/strong>, mientras que la mayor\u00eda de los humanos solo podemos hacerlo en un \u00e1ngulo de 12-18 grados. Gracias a esta peculiaridad f\u00edsica los pigmeos puede ‘andar’ pr\u00e1cticamente en posici\u00f3n vertical por el tronco, lo que les permite escalar los \u00e1rboles con la misma destreza que los chimpanc\u00e9s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al estudiar la fenomenal flexibilidad de los pies de los Twa, los cient\u00edficos no percibieron ningunas anomal\u00edas en la anatom\u00eda del mal\u00e9olo o las plantas, aunque comprobaron que los m\u00fasculos de sus pies eran m\u00e1s largos y flexibles.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
