Por <strong>debajo del nivel de da\u00f1o que el paciente no tiene la sensaci\u00f3n<\/strong>, en incapaces de moverse voluntariamente, y pierde el control de los intestinos, la vejiga y las funciones sexuales. <strong>Estos s\u00edntomas se deben a los da\u00f1os a las fibras nerviosas que viajan de\u00a0 arriba y abajo de la m\u00e9dula espinal<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Lo que ofrece una esperanza para estas personas es que las fibras nerviosas sobreviven a ambos lados de la lesi\u00f3n<\/strong>, y producir brotes que intentan cruzar la lesi\u00f3n. Nuestro concepto de la reparaci\u00f3n consiste en volver a construir un puente para que estas fibras nerviosas que brotan de recuperar su destino original y restaurar las funciones perdidas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u2026\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>C\u00e9lulas <\/strong> envolventes de bulbo \u00a0olfativo<strong> olfativo (OECO)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>\u2026\u2026\u2026..<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>La idea de colocar un puente a trav\u00e9s del \u00e1rea de da\u00f1o<\/strong> indica que habr\u00eda que trasplantar alg\u00fan material vivo en la regi\u00f3n donde las fibras se han roto. Pero, \u00bf<strong>d\u00f3nde conseguir ese material? Se descubri\u00f3 que la \u00fanica parte del sistema nervioso <\/strong>donde las fibras nerviosas pueden crecer en el adulto es <strong>el sistema olfatorio<\/strong> &#8211; las fibras nerviosas que pasan desde la nariz a trav\u00e9s de peque\u00f1as aberturas en la base del cr\u00e1neo y \u00a0entran en el cerebro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Usando un microscopio de alta potencia profesor Raisman descubri\u00f3<\/strong> un tipo \u00fanico de c\u00e9lula &#8211; la c\u00e9lula envolvente de bulbo olfatorio (OEC), que proporciona la v\u00eda para estas fibras. As\u00ed que el concepto d<strong>e nuestra reparaci\u00f3n era trasplantar OECs del sistema olfativo,<\/strong> en donde constituyen una v\u00eda para que las fibras nerviosas a crecer, en eln \u00e1rea de da\u00f1o en la m\u00e9dula espinal donde las fibras nerviosas da\u00f1adas no crecen. La esperanza era que las OECs trasplantadas \u00a0formen un puente que permita a las fibras nerviosas de corte en la m\u00e9dula espinal a crecer de nuevo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u2026\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Reparaci\u00f3n de las lesiones a la m\u00e9dula espinal de ratas<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">En nuestros estudios iniciales se examin\u00f3 el efecto de da\u00f1o a las fibras que viajan desde el cerebro hasta la m\u00e9dula espinal. La ruptura de este tratado llev\u00f3 a una p\u00e9rdida de la funci\u00f3n en la pata delantera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong> El trasplante de la OECO en esta \u00e1rea de da\u00f1o form\u00f3 un puente, por el que las fibras nerviosas creciendo, y las nuevas conexiones restauran \u00a0la funci\u00f3n de la pata<\/strong>. Esto forma la base de toda la investigaci\u00f3n que estamos llevando a cabo. These connections convey sensory information from the world outside, and from inside the body, they are the basis of storing memories and training, and ultimately deliver the messages by which the body is controlled and voluntary actions are carried out. When parts of this network are damaged the fibres are disconnected and functions are lost. The most obvious of these are stroke, spinal injury, and glaucoma. At present there is no way of restoring these connections, and the purpose of our research is to find a method to overcome the obstacles facing repair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Damage to the spinal cord shows the typical features of these injuries. Below the level of damage the patient has no sensation, in unable to move voluntarily, and loses control of bowel, bladder and sexual functions. These symptoms are due to damage to the nerve fibres travelling up and down the spinal cord. What offers hope for these individuals is that the nerve fibres survive on either side of the injury, and produce sprouts which attempt to cross the injury. Our concept of repair is to re-build a bridge to enable these sprouting nerve fibres to regain their original destinations and restore lost functions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Olfactory Ensheathing Cells (OECs)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The idea of placing a bridge across the area of damage indicates that we would have to transplant some living material into the region where the fibres have been severed. But where to get such material? It was discovered that the only part of the nervous system where nerve fibres can grow in the adult is the olfactory system \u2013 the nerve fibres passing from the nose through small apertures in the base of the skull and entering the brain. Using high power microscopy Professor Raisman discovered a unique type of cell \u2013 the olfactory ensheathing cell (OEC) which provides the pathway for these fibres. So the concept of our repair was to transplant OECs from the olfactory system, where they provide a pathway for nerve fibres to grow, into an area of damage in the spinal cord where damaged nerve fibres do not grow. The hope was that the transplanted OECs would form a bridge enabling the cut nerve fibres in the spinal cord to grow back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Repair of Injuries to the Rat Spinal Cord<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In our initial studies we examined the effect of damage to fibres travelling from the brain down to the spinal cord. Severing this tract led to a loss of function in the fore paw. Transplantation of OECs into this area of damage formed a bridge, along which the nerve fibres grew, and the new connections restored fore paw function. This forms the basis of all the research we are now undertaking. Since we could achieve this level of repair in rats, we are determined to take the steps needed to transfer this technology to human application. The ability to restore hand function in a patient with a disabled hand would be a significant contribution to relieving a major factor in the impairment of quality of life<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The results so far indicate that injuries to the spinal cord and spinal roots can be repaired in rats. We believe this means it can be repaired in man.
