El virus ataca preferentemente al sistema inmunitario, destruyendo las defensas del organismo<\/strong>. El organismo cada vez tiene m\u00e1s dificultades para defenderse, por lo que aparecen infecciones -producidas por g\u00e9rmenes<\/strong>, par\u00e1sitos o virus- o algunas variedades de c\u00e1ncer que en condiciones normales no se producir\u00edan.<\/span><\/p>\n

En una primera fase el VIH se reproduce multiplic\u00e1ndose activamente<\/strong> en las c\u00e9lulas infectadas. Para defenderse, el organismo crea anticuerpos <\/strong>espec\u00edficos pero no consigue eliminar el VIH: disminuye la presencia de virus en la sangre, pero no impide que los virus sigan presentes<\/strong> y contin\u00faen su actividad en otros \u00f3rganos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Linfocitos CD 4 (o T4): El VIH puede infectar a distintos tipos de c\u00e9lulas pero tiene especial atracci\u00f3n por los linfocitos CD4 (o T4)<\/strong>, que dirigen el funcionamiento del sistema inmunol\u00f3gico.<\/span><\/p>\n

Desde el primer momento en que se produce la infecci\u00f3n por el VIH, el virus se encuentra activo y se replica (multiplica) constantemente generando nuevos virus. Los linfocitos CD4, luchan contra esta proliferaci\u00f3n viral<\/strong>, produci\u00e9ndose una aut\u00e9ntica guerra entre el VIH y los linfocitos CD4. Como resultado el n\u00famero de linfocitos CD4 va disminuyendo progresivamente y, si no se interviniera con el tratamiento, tras una media de 8-10 a\u00f1os la cifra de linfocitos habr\u00eda descendido de tal manera que el paciente podr\u00eda sufrir graves infecciones y tumores<\/strong>.
\nUno de los indicadores para medir las defensas es precisamente el recuento de CD4 (CD4\/mm3).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Anticuerpos: son elementos fabricados para luchar contra cualquier cuerpo extra\u00f1o (contra agentes infecciosos o no infecciosos). Los anticuerpos son espec\u00edficos: se sintetizan o fabrican anticuerpos espec\u00edficos para luchar contra cada agente -ant\u00edgeno- concreto.<\/span><\/p>\n

Se estima que los anticuerpos frente al VIH empiezan a aparecer entre la 2\u00aa y la 8\u00aa semana<\/strong> desde que el virus entra en el organismo. As\u00ed, la presencia de anticuerpos indica que ha habido infecci\u00f3n. Pruebas de detecci\u00f3n como el test Elisa, buscan precisamente la presencia de anticuerpos. Por eso, para que el resultado de estas pruebas sea concluyente, deben realizarse transcurrido un tiempo desde el \u00faltimo contacto de riesgo.<\/span><\/p>\n
