En M\u00e9xico los productores de ma\u00edz y cient\u00edficos se esfuerzan en impedir que el Gobierno autorice a transnacionales como Monsanto el cultivo de granos transg\u00e9nicos de uno de los alimentos b\u00e1sicos en ese pa\u00eds, el ma\u00edz. \u00a0Los activistas ya han iniciado una campa\u00f1a en Internet para recaudar fondos para los gastos relacionados con las acciones judiciales.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Tortillas, gorditas, enchiladas o sopes son solo algunos de los muchos platillos que ser\u00edan imposibles de cocinar sin ma\u00edz<\/strong> o, como lo llaman en M\u00e9xico, elote. Y es que los mexicanos obtienen m\u00e1s del 50% de su ingesta<\/strong> cal\u00f3rica de los granos de la mazorca.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amalia Sala Casales, una productora tradicional de ma\u00edz de Sochimilco, explica a RT<\/strong> el profundo significado<\/strong> que tiene para su comunidad los diferentes tipos de grano. \u00abEl ma\u00edz blanco es vida, el rojo es la sangre y el negro es la tierra, y el amarillo es para la abundancia, para que no nos falte la comida\u00bb, relata.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pero cuando le preguntan por el ma\u00edz transg\u00e9nico<\/strong> que quieren traer a su tierra las transnacionales como Monsanto<\/a>, su rostro cambia por completo. \u00abEse ma\u00edz no tiene vida, ese ma\u00edz no tiene esp\u00edritu. Ese ma\u00edz no es nuestro hermano. Es un ser extra\u00f1o para nosotros. Para nosotros lo sagrado es nuestro ma\u00edz\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n

Y es que Amalia cree que la empresa estadounidense pretende comercializar solo un tipo de grano, el transg\u00e9nico, que pondr\u00eda en peligro la diversidad<\/strong> del elote en el pa\u00eds. Solo en M\u00e9xico hay m\u00e1s de 60 tipos de ma\u00edz registrados. Y mientras que en la mayor\u00eda del mundo se consume como fuente de alimento, la\u00a0comunidad local\u00a0lo ve como mucho m\u00e1s que eso, atribuy\u00e9ndole incluso poderes curativos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Precisamente el alto consumo de ma\u00edz hace de M\u00e9xico un suculento mercado<\/strong> para las transnacionales. Monsanto cuenta con decenas de abogados para enfrentarse a las quejas de un peque\u00f1o equipo que lidera una demanda colectiva para evitar el cultivo de transg\u00e9nicos en el pa\u00eds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00abQueremos que la justicia mexicana nos permita probar con cient\u00edficos, con las pruebas con las que les estamos diciendo que los transg\u00e9nicos no van a permitir que la diversidad de ma\u00edces siga igual<\/strong> que ha seguido por 8.000 a\u00f1os. Y, por lo tanto, la diversidad es un derecho mayor, es un patrimonio biocultural mayor que el negocio de los transg\u00e9nicos\u00bb, declara el abogado de la demanda colectiva contra el ma\u00edz transg\u00e9nico, Ren\u00e9 S\u00e1nchez Galindo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
