El \u00faltimo estudio realizado por EE.UU. revela la tasa real de penetraci\u00f3n de los organismo modificados gen\u00e9ticamente (OMG) en el pa\u00eds y levanta la cuesti\u00f3n de su impacto econ\u00f3mico y medioambiental.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hace unos 15 a\u00f1os se introdujeron en EE.UU los primeros cultivos modificados gen\u00e9ticamente<\/span><\/strong>. Desde entonces y hasta septiembre de 2013 m\u00e1s de 12.000 diferentes modificaciones gen\u00e9ticas han sido aprobadas por el Departamento de Agricultura de los EE.UU. (USDA), seg\u00fan su\u00a0\u00faltimo informe<\/a>.\u00a0La mayor\u00eda de las modificaciones fueron realizadas para\u00a0ma\u00edz<\/a> (7.800) y la compa\u00f1ia que m\u00e1s modificaciones ha introducido es Monsanto<\/a> (6.782).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

En el a\u00f1o 2013 cerca de la mitad de los cultivos de cereales de EE.UU. correspond\u00edan a semillas modificadas gen\u00e9ticamente de una u otra manera. Por ejemplo el 93% de la soja cultivada por agricultores estadounidenses en 2013 era modificada gen\u00e9ticamente para ser tolerante a los\u00a0herbicidas<\/a> m\u00e1s fuertes y\u00a0t\u00f3xicos<\/a>.\u00a0El 85% del ma\u00edz y el 82% del algod\u00f3n cultivados\u00a0son tolerantes a los herbicidas y el 76% del ma\u00edz y el 75% del algod\u00f3n son cultivos modificados para resistir a los insectos.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

La autores de la investigaci\u00f3n pusieron de relieve que el cultivo de cereales resistentes a los insectos en general mitiga las p\u00e9rdidas por insectos, pero los beneficios del uso de los cereales tolerantes a los herbicidas no son tan evidentes. El mayor problema es que el uso de semillas resistentes a los herbicidas permite utilizar productos m\u00e1s fuertes y en mayores cantidades, algo cuyos\u00a0efectos\u00a0negativos\u00a0potenciales<\/a> son objeto de preocupaci\u00f3n.

\nAdem\u00e1s a\u00fan est\u00e1 pendiente una investigaci\u00f3n profunda sobre los impactos econ\u00f3micos y medioambientales del creciente cultivo de ma\u00edz, soja y algod\u00f3n modificados gen\u00e9ticamente. Entre otras cuestiones no resueltas, los autores del reporte mencionan la evoluci\u00f3n de la resistencia a los herbicidas de la maleza y finalmente la aceptaci\u00f3n por los consumidores.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

El informe a\u00f1ade que en los pa\u00edses industrializados los consumidores prefieren pagar m\u00e1s por la comida no modificada gen\u00e9ticamente<\/strong>, pero en los pa\u00edses emergentes la situaci\u00f3n es m\u00e1s compleja. Mientras unos consumidores prefieren la comida modificada gen\u00e9ticamente incluso si es m\u00e1s costosa que la comida convencional, otros prefieren pagar m\u00e1s por la comida que no contiene\u00a0OMG<\/a>. En este sentido, la mayor\u00eda de los estudios citados por el USDA insiste en que la mayor\u00a0cantidad de los que prefieren pagar m\u00e1s por los alimentos no modificados proviene de la\u00a0Uni\u00f3n Europea<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The report adds that in industrialized countries, consumers prefer to pay more for food that is not genetically modified, but emerging countries the situation is more complex. While some consumers prefer food genetically modified even if it is more expensive than conventional food, others prefer to pay more for food that does not contain GMOs. In this sense, most of the studies cited by the USDA insists that many of those who prefer to pay more for non-modified food comes from the European Union.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
