La nueva especie, bautizada como Tapirus kabomani<\/strong>, hizo parte curiosamente de los trofeos de caza de Theodore Roosevelt cuando ya era expresidente de EE.UU. durante una cacer\u00eda en 1912. La calavera de este especimen fue enviada a EE.UU., donde fue atribuida por expertos a una de las especies de tapir ya conocidas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ha sido solo hasta que las c\u00e1maras trampa instaladas por el equipo de investigadores lograron captar al nuevo animal<\/strong>, caracterizado por su pelaje oscuro casi negro, una menor alzada que el resto de especies de tapires conocidas y la inconfundible trompa achatada y \u00e1gil que caracteriza a estos animales.<\/span><\/p>\n

A pesar de que se estima que este tipo de tapir ha habitado las\u00a0selvas de Colombia<\/a> y Brasil durante miles de a\u00f1os, hasta este momento los\u00a0investigadores no hab\u00edan conseguido registro fehaciente de su existencia, aparte de los testimonios por parte de los habitantes de la zona, que fueron mayormente menospreciados por la comunidad cient\u00edfica.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
