En principio, estas opciones pueden ser infinitas y cambiar con el tiempo. A menudo las personas valoran los logros que no se reflejan, o al menos no en forma inmediata, en las cifras de crecimiento o ingresos: <strong>mayor acceso al conocimiento, mejores servicios de nutrici\u00f3n y salud, medios de vida m\u00e1s seguros, protecci\u00f3n contra el crimen y la violencia f\u00edsica, una adecuada cantidad de tiempo libre, libertades pol\u00edticas y culturales<\/strong> y un sentido de participaci\u00f3n en las actividades comunitarias. El desarrollo humano propicia el      crecimiento y la productividad, siempre y cuando este crecimiento      beneficie de manera directa a las personas pobres, las mujeres y otros      grupos marginados; <\/span><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>la igualdad<\/strong> en cuanto al crecimiento      econ\u00f3mico y otros par\u00e1metros del desarrollo humano; <\/span><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>la participaci\u00f3n y la      libertad<\/strong> ,      en especial mediante el empoderamiento, la gobernabilidad democr\u00e1tica, la      igualdad de g\u00e9neros, los derechos civiles y pol\u00edticos y la libertad cultural,      particularmente en los grupos marginales definidos por par\u00e1metros tales      como urbanos\/rurales, sexo, edad, religi\u00f3n, origen \u00e9tnico, par\u00e1metros      f\u00edsicos y mentales, etc.; <\/span><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>la sostenibilidad<\/strong> para las generaciones      futuras, en t\u00e9rminos ecol\u00f3gicos, econ\u00f3micos y sociales; <\/span><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>la seguridad humana<\/strong>: la seguridad ante      amenazas cr\u00f3nicas de la vida cotidiana tales como el hambre y las      discontinuidades repentinas como la desocupaci\u00f3n, la hambruna, los      conflictos<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>El \u00cdndice de Desarrollo Humano (IDH)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">E<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">l primer <a href=\"http:\/\/hdr.undp.org\/es\/informes\/mundial\/idh1990\/\">Informe sobre Desarrollo Humano<\/a><\/span> introdujo una <strong>nueva forma de medir el desarrollo mediante la combinaci\u00f3n de indicadores de esperanza de vida, logros educacionales e ingresos en un \u00cdndice de Desarrollo Humano compuesto: el ID<\/strong>H (vea el recuadro 1 debajo). Lo innovador del IDH fue la creaci\u00f3n de una estad\u00edstica \u00fanica que servir\u00eda como marco de referencia tanto para el desarrollo social como para el econ\u00f3mico.
